Trekking Tours - Lycian Way Self Guided - 8 day tour
Turkey Trekking
This tour offers you the opportunity to walk without a guide on some of the most beautiful sections of the Lycian Way. The route dips and weaves around the coast of Lycia between Fethiye and Antalya, where the Taurus Mountains meet the sea. You will be based at two quite different sea side resorts. Cirali, situated on a 4km long beach, renowned for the Caretta- caretta sea turtles that come to lay their eggs in the sand each year and Ucagiz - Kekova, a small fishing village situated in a beautiful bay. The region is named Kekova after the island on which there are the ruins of a town destroyed and submerged by an earthquake in the second century BC. Here you will take pleasure in seeing Lycian remains, mainly graves, Roman remains and medieval castles. The routes are clearly way-marked with red-and-white painted makings and you will be provided with guide notes, maps and transport to the start of each day's walk where necessary. Your guide notes contain a full guide to the cities and other items of interest around you. You will need strong boots, a backpack, water bottle, picnic box, swimsuit and sun hat.
The walks are considered to be *** moderate walks.
Day 1. Transfer from Antalya to Cirali
Today you will be taken to your hotel which is within easy walking distance of the beach. ( Transfer 75 km 2. 30 hrs)
Day 2. Cirali Ulupinar Cirali
From your base in Cirali you will walk to the Chimaera Mountains to admire the eternal flames left by the mythical Chimaera monster. A beautiful walk taking you through woodland and up along the Ulupinar river to Ulupinar village. Here you can enjoy a fresh trout lunch if you wish, before you continue on back to Cirali, through more woodland and along a river canyon.Distance 25 km, 7 hrs. (Optional 4hrswalk to Ulupinar and then taxi transferback to Cirali).
Day 3. Cirali Olympos Cirali
Starting from the Hotel you'll walk to the ruins of Olympos. Once an important Lycian city, the remains seen today are mainly Roman. After having explored this idyllic place your walk ends at the beautiful beach where you can walk along the shore back to Cirali. Relax and enjoy the clear seas, wide beach and the al fresco bars. Distance 13km. Approx. 5 hrs
Day 4. Transfer to Ucagiz Kekova
Taxi transfer from Cirali to Kekova ( 1.30 hrs) with stop in Demre for a visit to ST Nicolas church Check into the friendly Pension in Ucagiz.
Ucagiz Simena Burc Ucagiz
From the village of Ucagiz it is an hour's walk to Kalekoy, the ancient name for Simena. You'll walk past ancient Lycian tombs and through old olive groves. From the medieval castle at Simena, with its wide theatre carved into the rocks, there is a wonderful view of the sea.. From here continue to another medieval castle at Burc. There is a wonderful bay and beach which make a good place for a rest or a swim. Follow the same route back to your pension.Distance 14km. Approx 3hrs.
Day 5. Ucagiz Asar Ucagiz
A walk to the remains of the unknown Tyberissos at Asar hill (365m). Walking through woodland and over goat paths to Asar and back again following the path back along the fields and mountain range.Distance 14km. Approx 4 hrs. After this walk explore the area for yourself. For example, take a boat trip to Kekova Island to see the remains of the sunken city and to the south west of the island, at a spot named Tersane (an ancient dockyard) looms the apse of a long-vanished church.Distance 14km. Approx 4 hrs.
Day 6. Ucagiz Aperlae - Ucagiz
After a short boat transfer from Ucagiz, you reach Ramazan's jetty and from here you'll walk to Aperlae. A remote ancient Lycian city destroyed by an earth quake in the second century BC. The remains of the city walls are fairly well preserved and easily identified as is the Byzantine church. After exploring Aperlae, and possibly even a swim, follow the goat track through woodland and along the coastal cliffs back to Ucagiz. Distance 27km. Approx 7 hrs.
Day 7. Transfer to Antalya
From Demre you will catch the bus to Antalya, where you will be met and taken to your hotel in the old quarter of the city, Kaleici. From your hotel visit some of the sites of Kaleici. Walk from the old harbour, up past the myriad carpet and souvenir shops to the castle gate and the clock tower. Hadrian's Gate is well worth a visit.
Day 8. Transfer to Airport.
